AirSpeed Telecom and RTÉ News develop innovative communications for Election 2011

LiveLinx, AirSpeed Telecom’s live broadcasting venture, will allow RTÉ News unprecedented speed of response to breaking news during the election

AirSpeed Telecom is providing RTÉ News with an innovative broadcast technology service for the duration of Election 2011 which will deliver live video footage from the main political party press rooms and a selection of constituency count centres directly to the RTÉ newsroom.

By utilizing AirSpeed Telecom’s LiveLinx live broadcasting service, to augment its conventional coverage, RTÉ will maintain the important speed of response to any breaking news from the count centres.

One of the issues for RTÉ with Election 2011 is the unpredictability of where the hot spots in terms of news are going to be.  Getting crew to an emerging hot spot on time or remaining at a particular count centre for a long period of time can be problematic and costly. AirSpeed Telecom’s nationwide network and LiveLinx broadcast turnkey solution, will allow RTÉ to provide complete coverage from all 43 constituencies for Election 2011.

AirSpeed Telecom’s LiveLinx service is providing RTÉ with a very cost effective solution to the issue of having to be in multiple locations with multiple technical crews. Up until now, RTÉ have used Satellite Mobile Units (SMUs) with a full crew to bring camera and broadcast equipment to critical count centres. RTÉ are also excited about future prospects for the service as it allows them tap into AirSpeed Telecom’s network with minimal advance warning enabling a fast response for news reporting.
RTÉ is already using AirSpeed Telecom’s Livelinx live broadcasting service for daily financial news with a similar service deployed in key stockbroker locations in Dublin.

Ray Purser, Director of Operations-News and Current Affairs, for RTÉ says:
“We are delighted to develop this innovative broadcast service in conjunction with AirSpeed Telecom. Our requirement for communications bandwidth for Election 2011 is significantly greater than before.  By using this new IP technology at some centres gives us the complete coverage necessary to provide a very fast response to any candidate’s count issues and ensure our viewers have up to the minute knowledge of election developments at the count centres nationwide.”

“The service also provides us with dedicated bandwidth, which we will use to facilitate both our online election services, where reporters will have uncontended broadband access. This will enable reporters to contribute live updates on RTÉ online through various social media channels and indeed have immediate remote access to our main newsroom election system from the field.”

Liam O'Kelly, Managing Director, AirSpeed Telecom, comments:
“We are very excited about developing this video over IP service with RTÉ and providing the political party press rooms with a reliable and very cost effective mechanism for live communications with the RTÉ newsdesk.  Apart from live streaming, the service also fulfils voice and data requirements for each location and is continuously available for the duration.”
