AirSpeed Telecom, the telecommunications company which operates a nationwide licensed wireless radio transmission network, is providing a 100Mbps broadband service to over 30 secondary schools nationwide as part of the innovative 100Mbps Post Primary Schools Project being rolled out by the Department of Communications and HEAnet.

The 100Mbps Post Primary Schools Project, which is initially being rolled out to 78 secondary schools nationwide, marks the next phase in the Government’s ambition to develop Irish schools as world class centres of e-learning and to educate the next generation of knowledge workers and digital entrepreneurs.

HEAnet, Ireland’s National Education and Research Network and network managers of this new high-speed network, is managing the roll out of the network with funding being provided by the Department of Communications. A total of four telecoms operators were chosen to provide the service to 78 schools nationwide. AirSpeed Telecom are providing 100Mbps broadband to 31 of those schools in a range of diverse geographical locations such as the Aran Islands, Tory Island and schools in Cork, Clare, Galway, Kildare, Wexford, Wicklow, Donegal and Dublin (see below for full list of schools AirSpeed Telecom is providing).

The project is the result of cooperation between the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources and the Department of Education and Science, HEAnet and the National Centre for Technology in Education.
Schools were selected against various criteria including geographical location and an adequate mix of schools to ensure broad social inclusion. The speeds available are similar to those that are being offered to high end national and multinational companies that operate in Ireland. They allow for the quick upload and download of material, instant connection to websites and the increased and varied use of online applications.

Liam O'Kelly, Managing Director of AirSpeed Telecom, comments: “AirSpeed Telecom’s licensed wireless network has reach, versatility and guaranteed quality of service to meet the needs of the schools.  Having such high speed connectivity will open new possibilities in education for each of these schools. With this level of connectivity, the opportunities for interaction and collaboration are unlimited.”

John Boland, CEO, HEAnet, says: “Our job is to use our expertise to leverage economies of scale and value for money in delivering services to all our clients, and this is an excellent example of HEAnet, and the Higher Education Institutions, maximising public investment in our shared infrastructure.”

:
Ronan Byrne, Special Programmes Manager, HEAnet, adds:“The advent of 100 Mbit/s connectivity at post-primary schools represents a quantum leap in network connectivity for these schools and allows web-based resources to be incorporated in classroom teaching in a far more effective and efficient manner. HEAnet are delighted to build and manage this network on behalf of the Irish Government and schools.”
