AirSpeed Telecom awarded NCSS contract to provide resilient back up network for BreastCheck cancer screening services nationwide

AirSpeed Telecom, the telecommunications company which operates a nationwide licensed wireless radio transmission network, has been awarded the contract to provide a back-up network for BreastCheck - The National Breast Screening Programme run by The National Cancer Screening Service (NCSS). The contract is for three years and was awarded following a competitive tender process.

BreastCheck provides free breast x-rays (mammograms) to women aged between 50 and 64 on a two yearly cycle and the NCSS has contracted AirSpeed Telecom to provide a resilient back-up network to support the BreastCheck screening service.

AirSpeed Telecom will provide a dedicated back-up circuit between each of the individual BreastCheck screening units around the country and the NCSS core site in

Parnell Street
in Dublin’s city centre. Licensed wireless radio technology will then be utilised to ensure the delivery of mission critical services from remote BreastCheck locations in Cork, Dublin and Galwayback to the NCSS Central Office in
Parnell Street
.

For the duration of this contract, AirSpeed Telecom will collaborate with Bootstrap Ltd, the company which provides and supports the NCSS with LAN and WAN infrastructure equipment. Bootstrap Ltd, Ireland’s longest established independent network integration company and a long-standing Cisco Silver Certified Partner, will work closely with AirSpeed Telecom in this mission critical project to upgrade the NCSS backbone network infrastructure.

The new contract win with BreastCheck follows a recent investment of €2.3million by AirSpeed Telecom in their network as part of a multi-million euro long term investment plan which demonstrates the company’s commitment to remain at the leading edge of radio transmission service provision in Ireland. This investment involved the addition of 23 high site locations to the network, providing a platform for greater national reach.

AirSpeed Telecom’s licensed wireless network is a proven alternative to traditional networks and also has the advantage of offering an uncontended high bandwidth service of up to 800Mbps which is uniquely dedicated to business customer use only.

AirSpeed Telecom was also recently awarded multiple lots of 26GHz spectrum licenses from ComReg which will significantly increase capacity in Dublin, Cork, Limerickand Galway for uncontended high bandwidth services.

Liam O'Kelly, Managing Director of AirSpeed Telecom, says:

“We are delighted to have won the contract for BreastCheck with the NCSS and to be in a position to provide them with a first class, highly resilient wireless radio transmission network. Due to the critical nature of the BreastCheck service, AirSpeed Telecom can guarantee the NCSS a reliable, safe and secure radio transmission network which meets all of their requirements.”

Gillian Connor, Head of ICT Services with the NCSS says:

“We required a wireless-based network and given our previous history with AirSpeed Telecom and their expertise in the wireless area, we decided they were best positioned to provide us with a reliable backup solution. If our major link goes down, we need the workflow to continue uninterrupted and the wireless back-up solution from AirSpeed Telecom provides the seamless consistency we require. Also, due to the confidential nature of the data we transfer, we require a controlled secure environment on our networks. All networks must comply with licence and frequency requirements, which AirSpeed Telecom does.”

AirSpeed Telecom, which began trading in November 2003, employs 35 at offices in Dublin(Citywest) and Cork(CIT Campus). Clients include RTE, TG4, Telegael, HEANet, Dairygold, NCSS (BreastCheck), AA Ireland,

One thing we noted was that AirSpeed deployed all of its own staff at all levels, for project management and installation. We weren't dealing with third parties here, and that was a big advantage in this case.
